James Oshinsky is a psychologist who lives and works on Long Island. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., 1972), the University of Tennessee (Ph.D., 1977), and the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University (Professional Diploma in Clinical Psychology, 1981). He has experience with a broad spectrum of clinical populations, from inpatient psychiatric units (Central Islip Psychiatric Center) to outpatient clinics, and from Special Education settings (Nassau BOCES) to local school districts.  His publications include  The Discovery Journal (2nd ed., 1994), a  guided workbook for adolescent self-discovery; feature articles on prejudice, creativity, and other topics for Free Spirit News, a bimonthly newsletter for grades 5-8;  pamphlets advising teachers and parents about how to appropriately deal with media information during the Gulf War, post-9/11, and during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; poems and essays on the men's movement; Return to Child  (2015), a compilation of techniques for participating in and leading improvised music activities; a guide for conducting humanistic music workshop activities (1989); and a collection of original songs and compositions (1994).  He has served as consultant to the children's museum Exploris for their interactive journaling exhibit. His pro bono activities include lectures for psychologists preparing for the New York State licensing examination.

Dr. Oshinsky's professional presentations have included workshops on the principles of guided journaling to the National Association for Poetry Therapy, the Long Island Counselor's Association, and the Expressive Therapies National Conference.  He has also created staff development programs for school districts on such topics as inclusion placements for special education and at-risk students, responses to world crises, and bullying prevention. He has made numerous presentations on the subject of music improvisation and interpersonal communication.

Dr. Oshinsky served as a supervisor of School Psychology interns for 25 years and has been an outside reader for several dissertations in Clinical and School Psychology.  He has taught graduate psychology and health education courses at Adelphi University and Immaculata University and undergraduate psychology courses at Indiana University-Bloomington.
